I Want a Paperless Society

Writing

filesSpurred by my upcoming move, I finally hauled out my plastic crate full of files this morning, after letting loose bills and receipts pile up on top of it since, oh, probably January. It took me about 15 minutes to tidy everything away and drop the crate back into my closet.

I don’t understand why I loathe filing so much! I don’t save many papers and I have a good folder system set up, so it never takes me too long to sort through everything. But for some reason this is one area where I’d rather let a clutter of papers stack up than sit down and sort.

In addition to my “real” files, I have a handful of writing-related files — photocopies of articles about Victorians, executioners, dueling, Appalachian childrens’ games, and other useful odds and ends that don’t seem to be available online yet. I’d like to sit down someday and turn them all into PDF files or web pages, although in a few cases there are copyright considerations preventing me.

I keep hearing about a paperless society, but so far it’s eluded me. Pity; I guess I’ll have to steel myself to keep filing for the foreseeable future!
