Writing

The Martin Jerrold books were light, and now I'm moving back into heavier territory. Picked up Farewell to Manzanar, Remembering Manzanar, Years of Infamy and Folktales of Japan to finish up my story outlining. In the meantime, I've been skimming through God on Your Own: Finding a Spiritual Path Outside Religion by Joseph Dispenza, but I'm not finding it very inspiring, and I'm halfway through. Too superficial; I guess I was expecting a meatier critique of institutionalized religion and discussion of alternatives. Today I picked up Half-Blood Prince from Dad & Nancy's house to re-read before Deathly Hallows comes out later this month. Although Snape is a psychological mess, I maintain that he's on the side of the good guys. I predict that in DH he'll be killed defending one of the boys — probably Harry, but maybe Draco or any of the others.

Dad put Jerimy and me to work chopping down a tree in the morning, and then J and I took off to some local stores so that he could shop for his mother's birthday present. I expected him to be restless, but television has worked its consumerist brainwashing on him and he seemed to enjoy walking through several stores and considering a few possibilities before making a decision. He also spent a significant amount of time fingering clothing for himself, which was fine. Good to know what's catching his eye, for future reference. I let him waste as much time in the pet stores and the board shops as he wanted, but he wasn't quite as patient when I wanted to go into a learning store — those are a creative GM's paradise, but since I'm not running any games, it wasn't quite as fun. :-(
Next Saturday I'll take him to see the Harry Potter movie. I'd take him to a midnight show mid-week, but then he'd be asleep during his Junior Lifeguard class the next day.
