If Rob hasn’t seen it, he should; there’s something about it that makes me think of him. Or Black Willem, maybe, since half the Vikings have Scottish accents! Beowulf & Grendel is kind of … well, likably bad. It’s visually gorgeous — filmed in Iceland, with striking landscapes and seascapes. And real effort was put into creating high-quality period costuming and settings. The ponies are beautiful. Beowulf’s kinda cute, too, although he’s apparently been eating well. You even end up feeling sympathetic toward Grendel, once you get past the whole grunting thing. But then, in the midst of all this, you’ve got these modern, completely anachronistic and mismatched accents, and what I can only assume are inadvertently hilarious lines like, “I’m telling you, this troll’s a real prick.” It watches like a D&D game. Not an adventure; a game. Like a bunch of players dressed up in costume, having fun but not even trying to sound like epic heroes….
